If you’ve ever thought “I’d love to learn music — but it’s probably too late for me now” — this site is for you. And I know that thought well, because I’ve heard it from adults for thirty years.
My name is Emma L.M. Sweeney. I’m a professional session singer, a BMI-published songwriter, and an arranger published through Hal Leonard — one of the world’s largest music publishers.
Over the past three decades I’ve worked with Universal Music Group, Defected Records, Glitterbox, the BBC, and a long list of independent labels and artists across Europe, the UK, the USA and Australia.
I’ve also been teaching music for 30 years — across instruments including voice, guitar, bass guitar, piano, violin, viola, cello, trombone and music theory — to students ranging from complete beginners to conservatoire-level players.
If there’s one thing that’s obvious after all of that, it’s this: There isn’t one ‘right’ way to learn music. There’s just the way that works for you. The students who stay with me longest, and who make the most progress, are almost always adults who came in convinced they had no ability.
They were wrong. Without exception. What they were missing wasn’t talent. It was confidence, and a clear place to start.
Most music education is designed for children — graded exams, practice regimes, formal structures. That system does not work for adults who want to learn because they love music, not because they’re building towards a qualification.
The Clueless Artist exists to fill that gap. Everything here — the videos, the printables, the guides — is designed for adults who are starting from scratch and want something that actually makes sense.
If that sounds like what you need, you’re in the right place.
